Job Description

Our Client is a corporately owned Hospital seeking an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join their well-established 15-vet team based in beautiful Somerset.

The full-time rota is based on a 4-day working week with a fixed day off. Clinical work is scheduled between 9 am and 6 pm, ensuring time for admin and case catch-up without extending the day. Consultations are 15 minutes long, with double appointments for complex cases and euthanasia. The team benefits from an organised surgical rota, with two vets operating all day and a third vet assisting for the majority of the day—each vet has at least one full operating day weekly. The role includes both consulting and surgical responsibilities within a varied and rewarding small animal caseload. The practice provides its own OOH cover, but the rota is designed with staff well-being in mind. Over a 9-week rolling rota, 7 weeks involve a 4-day week with no weekends or night shifts. OOH duties are minimal and structured into two blocks every 9 weeks. Week 1 involves a Saturday morning consult and daytime-only on-call across the weekend, followed by a 3-day week. Week 2 includes night on-call and a short Saturday consult shift, with no day shifts. On-call is from home, and a dedicated night RVN team is on-site to monitor inpatients.

The hospital is supported by a large, experienced team of 16 RVNs, 4 SVNs, and 4 VCAs. Several nurses hold ECC certificates. The practice is well-regarded for its strong mentorship, excellent team culture, and support for professional development, including support for vets wishing to pursue certificates. Areas of clinical interest across the team include surgery, medicine, ophthalmology, dermatology, imaging, and oncology. The hospital also takes referrals in ophthalmology and orthopaedic surgery.

The ideal candidate will be a confident vet with some experience in small animal practice. A keen interest in developing a clinical area or working towards a certificate is welcome and will be fully supported.

Practice equipment includes advanced surgical facilities, eight consult rooms, multiple waiting areas, and modern diagnostics. The hospital has recently undergone an expansion to support continued growth.
