Job Description

Introduction

Our Client is an independently owned hospital providing RCVS accredited small animal veterinary care in South West London. Launched in June 2020, the practice offers round-the-clock care, including routine consultations, health checks, procedures, emergency and critical care, and referral-level treatments and facilities.

Working Hours / Rota

The role involves working across both day and emergency and critical care services. On occasion, the successful candidate may be required to cover out-of-hours patient care or emergencies, for example due to staff sickness, holidays, or unavoidable emergencies.

Role Description

This newly created Veterinary Surgeon role offers the opportunity to work within a small, highly skilled ECC team, while also being part of an experienced day team. The position provides a balance of emergency and critical care, surgery, diagnostics, inpatient care, and general practice work.

Daily responsibilities will include consultations for new patients, accurate examinations, diagnostic testing, diagnosis, inpatient care, timely reporting of results, surgical interventions when indicated, and stabilisation of patients for surgery by the day team where appropriate.

The successful candidate will manage cases from first consultation through to full diagnostic work, hospitalisation, treatment, monitoring, and discharge. The practice does not discharge animals in the middle of the night, and patients are managed until fit for discharge to primary care practice where appropriate.

This role offers excellent opportunities to continue developing an ECC skillset while working alongside a trusted peer group, an experienced day team, and visiting specialists who are advanced certificate holders in their chosen fields.

Team Size

The role sits within a small, highly skilled ECC team and an established, experienced day team. The wider team values collaboration, staff development, clinical excellence, and the use of cutting-edge technologies.

The practice also works with a variety of visiting specialists, all of whom are advanced certificate holders in their chosen fields. This provides exposure to complex cases and supports the continued development of the clinical team.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and confident Veterinary Surgeon with a strong interest in emergency and critical care, surgery, diagnostics, and inpatient care. You will be comfortable managing a varied caseload, including emergency cases, from initial consultation through to treatment, monitoring, and discharge.

You will be confident working as the sole vet when required, with RVN support, and able to make sound clinical decisions under pressure. Strong communication, excellent clinical record keeping, and a compassionate approach to clients, patients, and colleagues are essential.

Good surgical and medical confidence is important, with experience in emergency procedures, diagnostic imaging, inpatient care, blood gas interpretation, blood products, perfusion management, and CPR. An ECC certificate would be preferred but is not essential, and additional experience in advanced surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, or Official Veterinarian work would be advantageous.
