Job Description
Introduction
Our Client’s practice is a well-established small animal surgery located in Maldon, Essex, within the picturesque Heybridge Basin area and with excellent access to London and the wider East of England. Having served the local community for over 10 years, the practice has developed a loyal client base and a strong reputation for high-quality first opinion veterinary care.
The practice offers a varied and engaging caseload across dogs, cats, small furries and exotics, alongside a collaborative and supportive clinical environment where clinical freedom is actively encouraged. Regular clinical meetings, in-house CPD and close working relationships with visiting certificate holders ensure a high standard of patient care and professional development throughout the team.
Working Hours / Rota
The practice is ideally seeking a Veterinary Surgeon able to work 3-4 days per week with shifts running from 9am – 7pm.
Weekend commitment is 1 in 4 weekends on a shared rota basis. There are no out-of-hours duties and only minimal bank holiday requirements.
Role Description
The successful Veterinary Surgeon will manage a broad first opinion caseload including consultations, diagnostics, inpatient care and routine to emergency surgical procedures. Surgical cases regularly include neutering, mass removals, dentistry, pyometra surgeries, caesareans, foreign body procedures, cystotomies and wound management.
The practice would particularly welcome candidates interested in Clinical Lead or Senior Veterinary Surgeon responsibilities and can provide excellent support for leadership progression. Clinical freedom is strongly supported, allowing vets to manage cases to a high standard while pursuing individual clinical interests.
The team also works closely with a visiting certificate holder in small animal surgery and orthopaedics, allowing more advanced procedures to be performed in-house.
Team Size
The team currently consists of 3 Veterinary Surgeons including a New Graduate Vet, 4 Nurses, 1 Student Nurse, 2 VCAs, 4 Receptionists and a dedicated Practice Manager.
The practice maintains a close-knit and collaborative culture, with regular clinical meetings, in-house CPD sessions and social events outside of work.
Practice Details
The practice is equipped to support a wide range of first opinion medical and surgical cases and benefits from strong links with its sister branch for additional clinical support. The team sees a varied caseload including small furries and exotic pets alongside more traditional companion animal work.
Located in Maldon, the practice offers excellent transport links with nearby rail services into London Liverpool Street in under 45 minutes, easy road access via the A12 and convenient access to Stansted Airport.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an RCVS registered Veterinary Surgeon with at least 3-4 years’ UK small animal experience. Applicants should be confident with routine surgeries, consultations and case workups while also enjoying collaborative working within a supportive clinical team.
The practice would particularly welcome candidates with leadership ambitions or previous Lead Veterinary Surgeon experience who are keen to continue developing within a senior clinical role. Strong communication skills, a proactive attitude and a passion for delivering exceptional patient care are essential.
