Introduction
Our client is seeking an experienced and confident Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon to join a modern, purpose-built animal hospital. This role is ideal for a vet with a genuine passion for Emergency and Critical Care and who thrives within a collaborative and well-supported team. The hospital is newly built, fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, and staffed by a large multidisciplinary clinical team that provides exceptional patient care around the clock.
Working Hours / Rota
This position offers exceptional flexibility to suit your lifestyle and personal commitments. Example rota patterns include 4 nights on / 8 nights off, 5 nights on / 10 nights off, or 7 nights on / 14 nights off. The hospital is also open to designing a bespoke rota that works for you while integrating seamlessly with the wider team. These extended periods off provide an excellent balance between clinical engagement and personal time.
Role Description
As the Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon, you will manage a wide variety of emergency and urgent cases while overseeing the overnight care of inpatients. You will work closely with a highly skilled night RVN team, with the full support of the day referral clinicians available when needed. This role offers exposure to complex medical and surgical cases in a structured and well-supported environment, making it an excellent opportunity for vets who enjoy ECC and wish to further develop their skills in a hospital setting. You will play a vital role in ensuring continuity of care and maintaining high clinical standards throughout the night.
Team Size
You will be working within a stable, friendly, and highly experienced team of over forty clinical professionals. This includes Advanced Practitioners and certificate holders across a range of specialisms such as Orthopaedics, Internal Medicine, ECC, Soft Tissue Surgery, Imaging, and Exotics. The hospital’s supportive environment encourages collaboration, case discussion, and ongoing learning, creating a culture that values every member of the clinical team.
Practice Details
The hospital is an advanced, multidisciplinary referral centre designed to deliver gold-standard veterinary care. Facilities include a spacious ICU, full diagnostic suite, advanced imaging, and multiple specialist theatres. The hospital is staffed 24/7, with dedicated night RVNs and auxiliary support ensuring continuity of care throughout the night. The workplace culture is positive, respectful, and built around teamwork, with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence and staff wellbeing. Accommodation is available if needed.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with a strong interest in ECC and the confidence to manage a diverse caseload independently during night shifts. You should be calm under pressure, an excellent communicator, and committed to delivering high standards of clinical care. Whether you are already ECC-focused or looking to build this area of your career, this role offers outstanding opportunities for development, including the option to pursue a certificate supported by tailored CPD. A positive attitude and willingness to integrate into a multidisciplinary team are essential.
