Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is an independently owned, RCVS-accredited small animal hospital based in Bridgend, South Wales, seeking an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join their team in a part-time hospital-based position. The hospital offers a supportive, collaborative environment where patient care and clinical standards are prioritised, with excellent facilities and opportunities to develop both clinical and leadership skills.
Working Hours / Rota
This is a permanent part-time position working either 3 or 4 fixed days per week. The role is strictly weekdays, with no weekend work or out-of-hours responsibilities. The hospital’s dedicated OOH team provides overnight care and continuity for patients, allowing for a consistent working pattern and excellent work-life balance.
Role Description
The successful Veterinary Surgeon will take responsibility for overseeing the care of hospitalised patients, assessing new admissions, developing and reviewing treatment plans, and ensuring excellent continuity of care. The role also involves overseeing outpatient diagnostic imaging and working closely with colleagues and clients to maintain high clinical standards.
There will also be opportunities to mentor graduate vets, support clinical development and contribute to ongoing improvements in patient care. This position would suit someone who particularly enjoys inpatient medicine, diagnostics and clinical leadership.
Team Size
The hospital has an established team of experienced Veterinary Surgeons, nurses and support staff, including a dedicated OOH team. Experienced clinicians work collaboratively with developing vets, creating a supportive environment with a strong emphasis on case discussion, mentoring and professional development.
Practice Details & Equipment
The hospital is an independently owned, RCVS-accredited small animal hospital with its own emergency service, providing continuity of care for hospitalised patients. It is also an EMS, VetGDP and veterinary nurse training practice, with an emphasis on clinical development and quality improvement.
Facilities include separate areas for cats, dogs and exotic patients, digital radiography, Doppler ultrasound, dental radiography, a comprehensive in-house laboratory including SediVue, and endoscopy equipment. The hospital manages a varied caseload, with many procedures retained in-house.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years of UK clinical experience and be confident managing hospitalised patients, emergency and critical care cases, and diagnostic investigations. Strong clinical decision-making, excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach are essential.
An interest in mentoring less experienced colleagues would be particularly beneficial, with VetGDP Adviser experience desirable. Postgraduate qualifications or Advanced Practitioner status in Medicine, ECC, Diagnostic Imaging or Cardiology would also be advantageous.
