Job Description

Introduction
Our Client is an independently owned, RCVS-accredited small animal hospital based in Bridgend, South Wales, looking to recruit an experienced Senior Veterinary Surgeon. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident clinician seeking a varied first opinion caseload alongside clinical leadership and supportive out-of-hours back-up responsibilities.
The hospital offers a collaborative environment where clinical independence, professional development and high standards of patient care are encouraged.

Working Hours / Rota
The position involves a 4-day working week, consisting of four 8-hour shifts. The rota includes second on-call duties 1 in 4 weeks, primarily providing telephone support from home to the first on-call vet, with attendance required when necessary for more complex cases.
There is also a 1 in 4 weekend morning commitment to care for hospitalised patients. A Registered Veterinary Nurse and Student Veterinary Nurse are on site 24/7, and the successful candidate must live within 30 minutes’ travelling time of the hospital.

Role Description
The successful Senior Veterinary Surgeon will enjoy a varied caseload involving consultations, inpatient care, routine and more complex surgery, and Cats Protection work.
The role also involves providing guidance to developing vets, supporting clinical decision-making and assisting colleagues with challenging cases. Consulting days include a protected one-hour lunch break alongside scheduled telephone and administration time.
There is scope to develop individual clinical interests while contributing to the wider hospital’s clinical standards and ongoing development.

Team Size
The hospital benefits from an experienced veterinary and nursing team, supported by senior clinicians with Advanced Practitioner qualifications in Small Animal Surgery and Feline Medicine. Veterinary nursing support is available around the clock, with a collaborative approach to case management, mentoring and clinical development.

Practice Details & Equipment
The independently owned, RCVS-accredited hospital is purpose-built and equipped to manage a wide variety of small animal cases. It has separate facilities for cats, dogs and exotic patients, supporting a high standard of patient care.
Equipment includes digital radiography, Doppler ultrasound, dental radiography, an in-house laboratory including SediVue, and a range of endoscopes. The wider veterinary group also operates additional branch practices in South Wales.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with strong first opinion, emergency medicine and surgical skills. They should be confident managing complex cases, making independent clinical decisions and offering practical support to less experienced colleagues.
Excellent communication skills, a calm approach under pressure and a willingness to mentor others are essential. The position would particularly suit someone looking for a senior clinical role that combines general practice responsibilities with additional emergency back-up support.
