Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is an independently owned, RCVS-accredited small animal hospital based in Bridgend, South Wales, seeking an experienced Senior Veterinary Surgeon to join their established clinical team. The position offers an interesting combination of first opinion veterinary work, emergency care and mentoring opportunities within a supportive hospital environment.
The hospital provides its own out-of-hours service, allowing continuity of patient care and exposure to a broad and varied caseload.
Working Hours / Rota
The role follows an 11-week rota, with the majority of working weeks based around a 5-day schedule involving consultations, inpatient care and surgery.
The out-of-hours commitment includes 7 nights on call, followed by 7 days of paid recovery, alongside 3 weekend mornings across the 11-week rota. During on-call periods, an RVN and SVN are on site 24/7, with senior veterinary back-up available when required.
When on call, the successful candidate must either live within 15 minutes of the hospital or be willing to stay in the on-site accommodation provided.
Role Description
The successful Senior Veterinary Surgeon will manage a varied first opinion caseload, including consultations, inpatient care, diagnostics and surgical procedures. The position also involves providing emergency and out-of-hours care as part of the hospital’s established on-call rota.
Alongside clinical responsibilities, the successful candidate will provide advice and practical support to developing vets, contribute to case discussions and assist with clinical training. There is also scope to develop individual clinical interests while maintaining a broad range of general practice skills.
Team Size
The hospital has an established team of Veterinary Surgeons, Registered Veterinary Nurses and Student Veterinary Nurses, with experienced senior clinicians providing additional support. The clinical team includes Advanced Practitioners in Small Animal Surgery and Feline Medicine, creating an environment that encourages case discussion, shared learning and mentoring.
Practice Details & Equipment
The purpose-built, independently owned hospital is RCVS accredited and provides both first opinion and emergency veterinary care. The facilities include separate waiting and hospitalisation areas for cats, dogs and exotic patients.
Equipment includes digital radiography, Doppler ultrasound, a dedicated dental suite with dental radiography, a comprehensive in-house laboratory including SediVue, and a range of endoscopy equipment.
The hospital manages a diverse caseload and benefits from its own out-of-hours service, allowing patients to receive consistent care within the practice.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon who is confident managing a varied first opinion caseload and comfortable undertaking emergency and on-call responsibilities.
Strong clinical decision-making, good surgical and medical skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential. The successful candidate should also be approachable, supportive and happy to mentor developing vets, contributing positively to the hospital’s collaborative clinical environment.
