Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is a corporately owned Hospital seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join their large multidisciplinary team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a proactive hospital environment, supported by certificate holders and extensive facilities.
Working Hours / Rota
This is a Part-Time position, with a fixed rota working Wednesdays 9am – 6pm and Thursday 9am – 8pm. These are consulting shifts with 30-minute appointments as standard, allowing thorough workups and high-quality client communication.
There is a shared 1 in 4 weekend rota, with weekend working consisting of ECC and pre-booked emergency consults only, working alongside a full clinical team including management. There are three vets per shift as standard, managing hospital inpatients, emergency-on-the-day appointments and ECC procedures and surgery. Veterinary teams are carefully balanced to reflect skills and competence across medicine, consulting and surgery. There is no sole charge.
Role Description
This position is primarily consult-focused, with 30-minute sick pet consultations as standard, allowing thorough case workups and strong client communication. The caseload includes complex and advanced medical presentations, including Addisonian patients, ketoacidotic diabetics, severe pancreatitis cases and other challenging hospitalised patients.
The hospital regularly performs advanced procedures such as oesophageal tube placements, Seldinger chest drain placements, abdominal drains, endoscopy and negative pressure wound therapy. While this is not a high-surgical caseload role, vets with interests in imaging, inpatient hospitalisation, ophthalmology, dermatology or feline medicine are highly encouraged to apply. There is scope to develop dedicated referral clinics in these disciplines, supported by the hospital’s strong referral stream and in-house expertise.
You will be part of a proactive in-house CPD and clinical development veterinary team, with certificate sponsorship encouraged and genuine support to expand and shape services within the hospital.
Team Size
The hospital employs around 70 colleagues, including 15 Vets, alongside a large team of nurses and support staff. The team benefits from in-house certificate holders and strong peer collaboration across disciplines.
Practice Details
This is a 24/7 RCVS-accredited hospital with advanced facilities. The hospital regularly undertakes complex procedures including oesophageal tube placements, Seldinger chest drain placements, abdominal drains, endoscopy, and negative pressure wound therapy. The medicine caseload frequently includes Addisonian patients, ketoacidotic diabetics, and severe pancreatitis cases. The hospital provides referral support for 19 surrounding practices.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with significant UK small animal practice experience and a strong clinical CV. They will be confident in managing complex consultations and inpatient cases within a hospital setting.
Additional experience or a strong interest in ophthalmology, dermatology, feline medicine, imaging or hospitalisation is highly desirable, particularly for those wishing to develop referral-style clinics. This role is best suited to a clinician who thrives in a collaborative hospital team and is motivated to contribute to ongoing service development.
