Introduction
Our Client is a non-profit, community-focused veterinary hospital in Barnsley seeking an experienced Referral Veterinary Surgeon with a passion for surgery. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing, multidisciplinary referral service with a strong focus on clinical excellence and making advanced veterinary care more accessible.

Working Hours / Rota
This is a full-time position working 40 hours across four days per week. There are no weekend requirements. Specific daily shift times and out-of-hours duties have not been provided.

Role Description
The successful Referral Veterinary Surgeon will manage a varied and complex surgical referral caseload across soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, with candidates experienced in either or both disciplines welcomed.

Responsibilities will include delivering advanced surgical procedures, supporting referring Veterinary Surgeons and collaborating closely with colleagues across ECC, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and first opinion services. The role also provides opportunities to contribute to clinical governance, mentor veterinary colleagues and play an active part in shaping and growing the hospital’s surgical referral service.

Team Size
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary hospital team working alongside colleagues across surgery, ECC, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and first opinion practice. Experienced nursing and support teams are also available, alongside referral colleagues across the wider veterinary network. Specific team numbers have not been provided.

Practice Details & Equipment
The 24/7 veterinary hospital provides emergency, first opinion and referral services, with dedicated referral facilities and modern surgical theatres. Facilities also include inpatient and intensive care wards to support complex surgical cases and ongoing patient management.

The hospital’s multidisciplinary structure provides access to expertise across several clinical disciplines and a growing referral caseload encompassing both soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon with Advanced Practitioner status or significant experience managing referral-level surgical cases. Experienced certificate holders with a strong surgical focus are encouraged to apply, while Diplomates and recognised specialists will also be considered with appropriate remuneration.

Experience across soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery is welcomed, with TPLO experience particularly relevant. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, alongside an evidence-based approach and an interest in mentoring colleagues and helping develop a growing surgical referral service.
