Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is a non-profit, community-focused veterinary hospital in Shrewsbury seeking a Veterinary Surgeon with a passion for Emergency and Critical Care to join its dedicated night service. This is an excellent opportunity for a clinician who enjoys a fast-paced environment and wants to manage a varied emergency caseload while working within a well-supported 24-hour hospital.
Working Hours / Rota
This is a part-time position averaging 20 hours per week across a three-week rota, working five nights followed by 16 nights off. The working nights are Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday during week one, followed by weeks two and three off. Night shifts run from 7:00pm to 8:00am.
Role Description
The successful Veterinary Surgeon will provide overnight emergency and critical care, managing incoming emergencies alongside hospitalised patients. The role offers exposure to a varied caseload and is particularly suited to a Vet who enjoys ECC and wants to continue developing their emergency clinical skills.
The night service works closely with the hospital’s daytime first opinion and referral teams, providing continuity of care and access to additional clinical expertise. There are excellent opportunities for further development through funded CPD, training and collaboration with advanced clinicians.
Team Size
The successful candidate will join a dedicated night team supported by the hospital’s wider first opinion and referral services. The wider clinical team includes advanced clinicians and surgical certificate holders, providing additional expertise and opportunities for collaborative case management. Specific team numbers have not been provided.
Practice Details & Equipment
The 24-hour veterinary hospital provides first opinion, emergency and referral services and is equipped for a broad range of medical and surgical cases. Facilities include two operating theatres, including a dedicated advanced surgery suite, a dental suite, five consulting rooms and separate dog and cat wards.
The hospital manages a varied caseload including soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, with advanced clinical support available through the wider team.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon with a genuine interest in Emergency and Critical Care who enjoys working in a busy hospital environment. They should be confident managing a varied caseload, empathetic towards both patients and owners and keen to continue developing their technical and ECC skills.
Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential, particularly when working alongside the daytime clinical teams to ensure effective case handovers and continuity of patient care.
