Job Description

Introduction
Our Client is an independently owned hospital group seeking an experienced Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Surgeon to join their dedicated night team, based at either their Chichester or Storrington Hospital. South Downs Emergency Vets is committed to delivering exceptional 24-hour emergency and critical care while providing a supportive, collaborative environment where clinical freedom, professional development and staff wellbeing are prioritised. As part of an independently owned veterinary group, the hospitals offer clinicians the opportunity to provide personalised patient care without corporate restrictions.

Working Hours / Rota
This position follows a 7 nights on, 14 nights off rota, averaging 33.1 hours per week under an annualised hours contract. Night shifts are typically 13 hours in duration, providing an excellent work-life balance while maintaining continuity of patient care.

Role Description
This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Surgeon to manage a diverse caseload across both first opinion and emergency cases. The successful candidate will work with a broad range of medical and surgical emergencies while also gaining exposure to advanced diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation cases.

The position provides an excellent platform for continued professional development, whether through certificate study, developing clinical specialisms or progressing into leadership. Working alongside experienced colleagues across emergency, referral and first opinion services, the successful candidate will enjoy a rewarding and collaborative clinical environment focused on delivering exceptional patient outcomes.

Team Size
The successful candidate will become part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team working across South Downs Emergency Vets, Arun Veterinary Group and South Downs Veterinary Referrals. The hospitals are supported by experienced Veterinary Surgeons, Registered Veterinary Nurses and referral clinicians, creating an environment where teamwork, mentorship and continuous learning are central to daily practice.

Practice Details
The successful candidate will be based at either the Chichester or Storrington Hospital, both of which are modern, state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals providing 24-hour emergency and critical care services. The hospitals also support four branch practices located in Worthing, Ashington, Pulborough and Westergate, ensuring seamless patient care across first opinion, emergency and referral services.

The hospitals have been thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming, home-from-home environment for clients and patients alike. Clinicians benefit from exposure to emergency medicine, surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation, making this an excellent setting for those wishing to broaden their clinical expertise while maintaining a strong focus on compassionate patient care.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an RCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon with previous Emergency and Critical Care experience and a genuine passion for ECC medicine. Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence and be confident managing emergency medical and surgical cases within a busy hospital environment.

The successful candidate will value teamwork, humility, empathy and honest communication while demonstrating professionalism and compassion towards both clients and colleagues. They will also have a desire to continue developing their clinical skills within an independent practice that actively supports ongoing professional growth.
