Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is a corporately owned 24-hour veterinary hospital in Dorchester looking for an experienced Night Veterinary Surgeon to join its multidisciplinary team. The recently refurbished hospital provides out-of-hours services for 12 surrounding practices, creating a broad and varied emergency caseload.
Working Hours / Rota
This is a permanent part-time position working two night shifts every three weeks, covering Monday and Tuesday nights from 6:45pm–9am.
The rota averages approximately 9.5 hours per week. This is a sole-charge veterinary position, with an experienced RVN providing nursing support throughout the shift.
Role Description
The Night Veterinary Surgeon will be responsible for managing emergency and hospitalised patients overnight, independently assessing cases, completing diagnostic work-ups and delivering appropriate medical or surgical treatment.
The hospital’s varied out-of-hours caseload provides excellent exposure to emergency and critical care cases. Although the Veterinary Surgeon will work sole charge, they will be supported by an experienced nursing team and become part of a wider multidisciplinary clinical team.
Team Size
The hospital has a highly experienced veterinary and nursing team, including certificate holders in Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Emergency & Critical Care. Other clinicians are currently studying towards qualifications in Surgery and Dentistry.
Practice Details & Equipment
The recently refurbished multidisciplinary hospital is equipped with a CT scanner, digital X-ray, ultrasound, dental X-ray, endoscopy, two sterile surgical suites and a dedicated in-house laboratory.
Additional facilities include a hydrotherapy unit, visiting physiotherapy support, isolation facilities and separate dog and cat wards. The hospital holds ISFM Silver Cat Friendly status and provides 24/7 patient care.
Ideal Candidate
The practice is specifically looking for a Veterinary Surgeon with a minimum of three years’ proven UK experience who is confident independently managing a varied out-of-hours caseload.
As this is a sole-charge veterinary role, candidates must be comfortable handling all aspects of overnight patient care independently, with RVN support available. Previous Emergency & Critical Care experience would be particularly advantageous.
