Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is an independently owned, multidisciplinary referral hospital near Cambridge, looking for an experienced ECC Veterinary Surgeon to join their dedicated out-of-hours team. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident Veterinary Surgeon to enjoy a varied emergency caseload within a specialist hospital environment, combining first opinion emergencies with referral inpatient care and access to experienced specialists.
Working Hours / Rota
The position follows a predictable four-week rolling rota comprising nine shifts, including one block of three nights, one block of four nights and one weekend of day shifts, averaging approximately 33 hours per week as advised by the hospital.
Night shifts run from 6:30pm to 9am, with weekend day shifts running from 8:30am to 7pm. The structured rota is designed to provide a consistent working pattern and an attractive work-life balance.
Role Description
The successful Veterinary Surgeon will be responsible for managing first opinion emergency consultations, assessing and stabilising critical patients, and overseeing referral inpatients where required. The caseload is varied, with the balance between emergency admissions and inpatient responsibilities changing depending on clinical demand.
The Vet will work independently overnight as the sole Veterinary Surgeon on site, with specialist support available on call across medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and neurology. This offers an excellent opportunity to develop ECC skills further while gaining exposure to complex referral-level cases.
Team Size
The overnight team benefits from excellent clinical support, including three RVNs and two Patient Care Assistants on site throughout the night. Reception support is also available on weekday evenings until 11pm. The wider hospital team includes experienced specialists who provide additional clinical guidance and support when required.
Practice Details & Equipment
The hospital is a modern, purpose-designed specialist referral facility offering advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities. Equipment and facilities include CT, digital imaging, ultrasound, dedicated operating theatres, endoscopy and laboratory facilities, alongside separate canine and feline wards and isolation facilities.
The multidisciplinary hospital provides specialist services across medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and neurology, creating a collaborative environment with access to a broad range of clinical expertise.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with a strong interest in emergency and critical care, comfortable making independent clinical decisions and managing urgent cases overnight. Approximately three years or more of post-qualification experience would be preferred, although confident first opinion Vets with strong emergency experience will also be considered.
Candidates with previous ECC experience or additional qualifications are particularly welcome. Strong communication skills, a collaborative approach and the confidence to manage a varied emergency caseload are essential.
