Job Description

Introduction

Our Client’s hospital is looking for an Out-of-Hours Registered Veterinary Nurse to join their night team in Cambridge. This is not your average night shift, offering the opportunity to work at the centre of emergency triage, inpatient care and anaesthesia within a multi-disciplinary referral hospital environment. The role would suit an RVN who enjoys variety, thrives in a team, and wants access to a broad and interesting caseload.

Working Hours / Rota

This is an out-of-hours role working an average of approximately 40 hours per week across the year. The rota follows a repeating 21-day cycle, comprising seven night shifts, one Saturday shift and one Sunday shift.

Night shifts run from 6:30pm to 7:30am. Saturday shifts run from 11:00am to 6:45pm. Sunday shifts run from 7:30am to 6:45pm.

In addition to the standard rota, there is a requirement to work up to 156 ad hoc hours as reasonably requested to cover absences, holidays or operational needs.

Role Description

The successful RVN will play a key role in the delivery of out-of-hours nursing care, supporting both emergency and inpatient cases. Daily responsibilities will include emergency triage, inpatient care, anaesthesia support and working closely alongside the veterinary team.

This role offers hands-on involvement with both GP out-of-hours cases and specialist inpatients, providing excellent clinical variety. There are also strong development opportunities through working alongside experienced clinicians, including European and RCVS Specialists.

Team Size

The advert describes a genuinely collaborative hospital team culture, with nurses working closely alongside vets and specialists. The environment is supportive, team-focused and built around good communication, shared responsibility and high standards of patient care.

Practice Details

The hospital provides access to the facilities and caseload of a multi-disciplinary referral environment. The role includes exposure to emergency, inpatient and specialist cases, with access to modern equipment and facilities. The team culture is described as collaborative, supportive and focused on wellbeing, professional development and clinical progression.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse with ECC or first opinion experience and confidence in anaesthesia. They will have strong clinical and patient care skills, the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and confidence working both independently and as part of a team.

They will also bring calm, compassionate communication skills, strong organisation, a genuine passion for animal care and welfare, and the ability to thrive in a varied out-of-hours hospital setting.
