Job Description
Introduction
Our Client’s hospital is the largest GP hospital within the group, providing first opinion, emergency, critical care and referral services to a large network of branches. The hospital operates to exceptionally high clinical standards and offers extensive on-site diagnostic and surgical capabilities. This role presents an excellent opportunity for an Internal Medic Veterinary Surgeon seeking a permanent position within a progressive, well-supported and highly equipped hospital environment.
Working Hours / Rota
The rota operates on a 6-week rotational basis, averaging 40 hours per week across a 4-day working week. The role includes a 1:3 Saturday and 1:6 Sunday rotation, with up to two bank holidays per year. You will also participate in a last-resort on-call rota approximately once every two weeks.
Role Description
As an Internal Medic Veterinary Surgeon, you will provide advanced investigative and diagnostic support within a busy hospital setting. Your responsibilities will include conducting consultations, performing comprehensive examinations, and developing evidence-based management and treatment plans in line with best practice and clinical protocols. You will investigate cases thoroughly using advanced diagnostic tools including radiography, endoscopy, ultrasound, CT imaging and laboratory testing.
The role requires maintaining compliance with RCVS and medicines legislation, appropriately prescribing and dispensing medications, and contributing to the continuous improvement of clinical standards within the hospital. With a high caseload of endoscopy and ultrasound procedures, this position is ideal for a veterinary surgeon who has completed or is currently undertaking a certificate in internal medicine and is looking to further develop their expertise within a collaborative hospital team.
Team Size
You will be joining a large and supportive multidisciplinary team of approximately 25 Veterinary Surgeons, 27 RVNs, 14 SVNs and 7 VCAs, alongside a substantial front-of-house team. Clinical and operational support is provided by an established leadership structure including a senior internal medic vet, senior RVNs, deputy head nurses, head nurse, head vet and hospital manager, ensuring strong mentorship and collaborative working.
Practice Details
The hospital is RCVS-accredited and delivers first opinion, emergency, critical care and referral services to over 20 local branches. The site benefits from state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities and an experienced surgical team that routinely performs advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue and minimally invasive procedures. On-site facilities include a CT scanner, a commercial laboratory and comprehensive diagnostic imaging equipment, enabling thorough case workups and high standards of patient care.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an MRCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon who has completed, or is currently studying towards, a certificate in Internal Medicine. You will have strong experience in endoscopy and ultrasound, excellent clinical reasoning skills and the ability to manage complex medical cases confidently. A client-centred communication style, strong time-management skills and the ability to work independently while recognising when to seek support are essential. You will also contribute positively to team morale and foster excellent working relationships within the hospital.
