Job Description
Introduction
Our Client is a corporately owned Hospital seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join their large multidisciplinary team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a proactive hospital environment, supported by certificate holders and extensive facilities.
Working Hours / Rota
The position is full-time across a 4-day week (Monday–Friday), with 1 in 4 weekends (10-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday). Weekend work primarily involves ECC, inpatient care, and 30-minute sick pet consults. There is no sole charge required.
Role Description
The role is primarily consult-focused, with opportunities for those with ophthalmology experience to combine consults with specialist clinics and procedure days. Vets with interests in imaging and inpatient hospitalisation care are also encouraged, as these areas of expertise are highly valued. This role is not suited to candidates seeking a high surgical caseload, as all surgical positions are currently filled. The caseload includes complex and advanced medical presentations, with opportunities to manage challenging cases and build expertise in a supportive environment.
Team Size
The hospital employs around 70 colleagues, including 15 Vets, alongside a large team of nurses and support staff. The team benefits from in-house certificate holders and strong peer collaboration across disciplines.
Practice Details
This is a 24/7 RCVS-accredited hospital with advanced facilities. The hospital regularly undertakes complex procedures including oesophageal tube placements, Seldinger chest drain placements, abdominal drains, endoscopy, and negative pressure wound therapy. The medicine caseload frequently includes Addisonian patients, ketoacidotic diabetics, and severe pancreatitis cases. The hospital provides referral support for 19 surrounding practices.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with significant UK practice experience and a strong CV. They will be confident in consultations, inpatient care, and ideally bring additional expertise in ophthalmology, imaging, or hospitalisation. This position is not open to recent graduates or vets requiring in-house training.
