Job Description

Introduction
Our Client’s hospital is an independently owned, RCVS-accredited small animal hospital providing exceptional emergency, critical care, referral-level treatments, and routine veterinary services. Launched in 2020, the hospital is passionate about animal welfare and delivering expert, compassionate care to pets and their owners, while fostering a supportive and progressive working environment for its clinical team.

Working Hours / Rota
This is a dedicated night role, working from 6:45pm to 8:15am the following morning. The standard rota follows a 7 nights on, 14 nights off pattern, offering an excellent work-life balance. Optional day shifts may be available within working time regulations for those wishing to supplement their hours. There are no middle-of-the-night discharges, with patients typically discharged the following day when clinically appropriate.

Role Description
The ECC Veterinary Surgeon will work as part of a small, highly skilled night team delivering a trusted emergency and critical care service for the local community and referring practices. The role involves sole-charge night work with RVN support, managing cases from initial consultation through diagnostics, medical and surgical intervention, and inpatient care. You will be confident handling complex emergency cases, performing advanced soft tissue and emergency surgical procedures, and ensuring excellent clinical outcomes with high standards of record keeping and client communication. Ongoing professional development is actively encouraged, with exposure to visiting advanced certificate holders and complex referral-level cases.

Team Size
You will be supported by a dedicated and highly skilled nursing team overnight, alongside a collaborative day team and visiting advanced certificate holders across multiple disciplines, creating a strong learning and development-focused environment.

Practice Details
The hospital is exceptionally well equipped, featuring multiple dedicated theatres with positive pressure ventilation, separate dog and cat wards, a large central patient hub, and multiple consultation rooms. Advanced diagnostic and imaging facilities are available in-house, including CT, digital radiography, high-end ultrasound, endoscopy, and comprehensive surgical instrumentation. The practice prioritises gold-standard patient care, staff wellbeing, and clinical excellence across all departments.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a confident and experienced Veterinary Surgeon with a strong background in emergency and critical care, comfortable working sole charge overnight with nursing support. You will be highly competent in diagnostics, medical case management, emergency surgery, and inpatient care, with excellent communication and client management skills. A compassionate, team-oriented approach and a genuine passion for ECC are essential. ECC certificate holders or those working towards advanced skills are welcomed, though this is not essential.

Equipment
The hospital is equipped with AGFA digital radiography, access to a CT scanner, digital display systems, electrosurgery units, extensive AO surgical instrumentation including stapling devices and suction, gastroscopes, bronchoscopes, rigid endoscopy systems, IMEC patient monitors, and the Philips Epiq Elite ultrasound system.
